Jon's Farewell Party

Sending Jon Off to the Peace Corps — June 2005

Jon went off to Ghana, Africa with the Peace Corps on June 7, 2005. The Saturday before he left, we had a great party to send him off. Family and friends gathered to wish Jon well on his incredible journey — two-plus years teaching at a secondary school in Bawku, a small village in the far northeast corner of Ghana.

The Send-Off

The party was held the Saturday before Jon's departure on June 7th. Ken was busy clicking off pictures at a rapid rate, capturing the warmth and excitement of the evening. Friends and family came from near and far to celebrate Jon's courage and wish him well on his Peace Corps adventure.

Jon's Mission

Jon joined the Peace Corps in 2005 and was assigned to teach at the Secondary School in Bawku — a remote village in the Upper East Region of Ghana, near the borders with Burkina Faso and Togo. He would spend more than two years there, living among the community and making a real difference in the lives of his students.

Ghana Awaits

Ghana is located in West Africa on the Atlantic Ocean — a country roughly the size of Oregon, and the first sub-Saharan African nation to gain independence from colonial rule. Ken and Kathleen would follow Jon to Ghana in August 2006, spending three incredible weeks traveling the country with him. But first — the party.
